There is a fine balance between getting rid of stuff we don't need or use and keeping things so our kids will have some sense of "home" when we get to the new house. We are getting rid of alot of furniture. It saves $ on the move if we don't have to bring all that. Plus, our furniture has been used and abused by my 3 little boys. We have to get rid of our beloved kitchen table. We got it as a wedding shower present. I LOVE it. It's so pretty. But, we are a family of 5 and it only has 4 chairs. There's not that much room to get another chair in. We've got the high chair pulled up to it as the 5th chair right now and it's pretty crowded. It's also very heavy. The base to the table and the chairs are made of iron and our very small children hurt themselves on it quite a bit. So, we're getting a new table. It will be nice when our parents come to visit us to have more than a 4 chair table. But I'll miss this one. This is a picture from when I recovered the chairs earlier this year.
It was our first table. It fit so nicely in our first apartment. There was this cute little nook carved out of the wall. The table
fit perfectly and when we sat down to eat, we were surrounded by windows. As I write I can remember it so well. We didn't have much furniture then, so it seemed like there was always an echo. It was so quite in the mornings. I went on "maternity leave" (I quite my job) about four months before Ben was born. It was so quite, so peaceful. We were the first people to ever live in that apartment. We moved in about a week after it was finished. There was the smell of new materials & dust in the air. You know, that "new house" smell. Right outside there was a little pond and the bull frogs would get so loud in the evenings. One day we opened our front door and about 10 little baby frogs came jumping in!
I'll never forget brining Ben home from the hospital to that apartment. I didn't think I'd ever make it down the stairs to the front door. Ah, that seems like so long ago! Next week we will be moving into our 4th house together in our 3rd state (unless you count college- but I'm not) with our 3 kids.
One more thing, being nostalgic about your kitchen table and running down the bunny trail that takes you on is a REALLY great way to distract you from actually getting anything done!!
