5 is a whole new world

Ben on slide.jpgMy oldest son turned 5 this month. Ever since I've come back from Tampa I am awestruck by this little kid living in my house. He's no preschooler anymore. He's my big boy. Immediately after they picked me up from the airport, we headed out to get something to eat. At the table, Ben began to color. I couldn't believe my eyes! He colored slowly, stayed in the lines, payed attention to detail, stayed focused. Maybe this sounds silly to you, but to me, I was seeing a transformation right before my eyes.

Today, I was sitting on the couch, folding laundry and watching tv. Ben sat down beside me and asked if "Reba" was on. That's a show we watch together sometimes that doesn't include light sabers or animation of any kind. I was so surprised that he asked me that, but very happy that he wanted to watch a show with me.

Then it happened. We were all just hanging out at the house. Scott and I were sitting in the kitchen and the doorbell rang. "It's Jordan!" They boys shouted as they ran to the door. Scott followed after them. Ben opened the door and I heard this, "Hey, do you want to come out?" "Yeah, just let me get my shoes on." Then Ben ran past me, through the kitchen, into the laundry room to get his shoes on. He went outside and played with the boys that came to the door for the next couple hours. Scott and I just looked at each other. Kids just came to our door to ask one of our boys to play outside!!!
Every few minutes, I peaked outside to check on them. They were doing typical boy things, like chasing, riding bikes & scooters, & of course examining things on the ground. My little boy is getting bigger. We have a 5 year old in our house now. It's a new thing, but it's pretty awesome!

It only gets better. They are amazing, these little people that grow up before our very eyes. And then we get to love them on top of that, and they call us mom. I love this gig!

I can't wait for those days!

And I have to say, Reba is watched DAILY in this household. My 3 1/2 yr old sings the theme song, knows who everyone is, repeats Barbara Jean is crazy over and over, and laughs loudly everyday. It's the best show ever b/c we both enjoy watching it without fighting over the remote.

Reba is even on in Belgium on a Sunday afternoon! I sometimes stumble on it as well :). The world can be small , huh.

Isn't it nice to see your children grow up and evolve and learning new skills all the time!

Five is fun! Though I don't have a 5 yr. old living in my house anymore, I get the chance to teach a new group of them every year. I love watching the look in their eyes as they tackle a new challenge and succeed! It's an awesome thing!
They are so much fun!

To repeat Stephanie: IT ONLY GETS BETTER! Watching my boys grow up is a wonderful experience. I wouldn't trade it for anything. :)

Yes, the friends thing is strange... It's as if the whole world has finally noticed you have a child. Very weird.

They do mature and grow so fast. I couldn't believe it because Jon is loosing his first tooth ! Remember when they first get them? I blinked and now he's getting his "big boy" teeth. Amazing. Every day is mind blowing.

Five is a sweet, sweet age - they're calmer than wild fours, but still with that intense little kid sweetness. It's a year to treasure.

Aww, such a sweet post.

This weekend, Stephen had a birthday party to go to. As we walked up the driveway to the boy's house, 2 little boys ran out and said, "Hi, Steve!" For a second, I looked around thinking, "Who's Steve?" THen realized they were talking about Stephen. MY little Stephen. I've never called him anything but that, but now he has friends who call him Steve. It was so strange, and my heart ached a little.

And we all love watching Reba, too.

Well, I can't offer a comment on Reba as I don't really watch TV ... unless it is hockey of course. :)

I can't imagine Kaelen being five. I am not ready for him to be five yet ... heck, I am still not coming to terms with him being 2 1/2. Yet reading about this makes me realize that it is going to be okay. That each year really does get better and better. Your boys truly are a bunch of cuties. You are a great Mom Sheryl!!

I know, isn't it amazing how it happens? Today we were in Sam's doing our shopping, and Cody asked if he could ride in the cart next to Caden (they have double seats in the carts now!). I looked at my five year old towering over my pre-toddler and had to scratch my head at how big he has gotten and how responsible he has become. He's my helper, my buddy, my little daytrip companion. And I'm going to cry crocodile tears when he goes to kindergarten next year...
